In a sport where patience often is vital, intensity has become a trait of the Washington High cross country teams.
Taking a cue from Wildcats coach Everett Whiteside, it's something each runner is expected to bring to practice, fitness workouts and competitions.
Intensity also has enabled the Wildcats to remain one of Northwest Florida's top cross country teams.
"We run about 60 miles a week," junior Ian Bordelon said at practice Tuesday. "We have one day that's set aside for a long run. Sunday is usually our long day."
Running on the weekends, even when there isn't a meet, is just part of the regular routine for the Washington boys, who have their hearts set on a 2009 state title.
"We practice usually seven days a week," said Peter Fricke, a junior on the team. "Every now and then, we'll take a day off.
